My breathing was ragged as I walked across the barren land of Zone 3. Few buildings were scattered around me. Perspiration dripped down my back as I trudged along, my legs threatening to fall out from under me. I stopped at one of the buildings near me, it's windows covered with planks of wood and graffiti written all over it. I pressed my back against the abandoned building, resting for a moment. My mind and body burned for the feel of cool water running down my throat. I hadn't eaten or drank anything in the past few days and the hunger was killing me. The last time I ate a halfway decent meal was when I broke into one of BL/ind's vending machines, only to find myself almost swallowing a pill hidden in the sandwich I had found.
I looked across the barren desert lying before me. It would take forever to get to Zone 6. As I looked on, squinting my eyes from the fiery glow of the sun, I saw a gray blur move across my sight. I looked again, squinting harder. It seemed to be a car? Suddenly, I felt hands grab at me, pressing my arms together at my back. A ray gun was pointed toward my head, plain white with BL/ind's logo printed upon it. A deep voice spoke threateningly, "Don't move."
I couldn't even muster a word because my throat was too dry to even speak. A little disoriented, I looked up once more and saw the gray blur moving towards me at an amazing rate. Finally, the blur took shape of an old, rusted-up Pontiac Firebird. The Draculoid held on to me tighter, not noticing the Pontiac barreling towards us. I heard another Drac speaking from behind me into a radio, "We found them." Them?
The Drac pushed my elbows further together, causing me more pain until I couldn't take it anymore. I kicked him in the groin, and the Drac let go of me, gasping in pain. Then I ran, greedily taking in gulps of air as I sprinted across Zone 3. The Firebird swerved to a stop, a few yards in front of me. Four men came out of the vehicle, pointing their colorful ray guns behind me. I ran on further, ignoring pain in my chest. At one point, the pain overwhelmed me. I fell to my knees, the scattered rocks scraping them. I felt a blow to my shoulder, coming from a ray gun. Then soon enough, I felt a kick to my side.
I heard the blasts of the ray guns going over my head, and then I heard a thud, and another. I looked off to my left. I saw the two Dracs lying on the ground, dead. I heard footsteps coming toward me. I turned my head in a futile effort, only to feel the full extent of my pain. I gasped, my breathing heavy from running so much. I grasped my side, curling up into a ball. The footsteps got closer until they finally came to a stop. I saw a pair of feet in combat boots come in front of my line of vision. My heart fluttered like a hummingbirds wings, as I wondered who these people were. I tilted my head up slightly. As I looked up, I saw bright red hair, and a face, covered in a yellow mask adorned with blue stones. He stared back at me with his hazel-green eyes. Before I could utter a word of thanks to this masked hero, I fell into a deep void of black.
